How do electric cars work?

Quiet, refined and with an exhilarating driving character unique to electrified** vehicles, Battery Electric vehicles run on electric power alone. Instead of an engine and fuel tank they use electric motors powered by a battery. Discover more about how the technology works by clicking on the animations below.
  • Charging

Charge the battery with electricity via a plug socket or Toyota HomeCharge at home, or using rapid public charging.*

  • The battery powers the electric motor, turning the wheels and driving the vehicle forward.

  • When the driver brakes and the vehicle decelerates, energy that would usually be lost during this process is sent to top up the battery.
